Olla pot: a centuries-old aid for irrigating plants

Very well known in the southern countries. Because there it is very dry in summer and you practically have to stand by your plants with the watering can. You  have better things to do!

This pot gives the plants water when you cannot do it

The olla (pronounced "oya") is an unglazed, porous, terracotta irrigation pot that can be buried in a central spot among the plants. The pot is then filled with water. The plant roots will grow towards the pot and draw water from it.

If the pot is topped up regularly (1-2 times a week), the plants lack nothing and you save 50-70% water. By sealing the pot, evaporation is prevented, the water does not become polluted and mosquitoes get no chance to lay eggs.

In a planter, vegetable garden or greenhouse

The olla pot irrigation pot is ideal for planters, vegetable gardens and garden greenhouses. The principle of this pot is actually very simple. It is a pot made of porous earthenware. You dig a hole in the ground, place the pot in it so that the opening sticks out just above the ground. Press the soil around the pot well so that it makes good contact with the pot. Fill with water, lid on top. You  can bury it next to already planted plants or first bury it and then place your plants around it. Of course also very suitable to bury in planters or tubs. Do you have less room in the pot because there are already plants in it? Then the water dripper is an excellent alternative!

Because the earthenware is porous, the water seeps very slowly out of the pot, straight to the roots of the plant. You will – should you take the plant out again – also see that the roots of the plant grow towards the pot. In this way you can provide plants with sufficient moisture when you do not have time to water the plants. For example, when you go on holiday. A filled olla pot irrigation pot waters your plants for about a week.

To be able to enjoy your Olla Pot for a long time, you will have to dig it up before winter and store it indoors, because of course this pot is not frost-resistant.

Stock, shipping and more

Summer can be hot and dry. Then demand for the Olla pot is sometimes just as great. Impossible to predict. Should the Olla pot temporarily be out of stock, you can still order it, unless it is indicated that the pots are sold out for the season. They are made on a small scale and do not have unlimited stock.
